MOTIVATING THOUGHTS

Triumphs without difficulties are empty. Indeed, it is difficulties that make the triumph. It is no feat to travel the smooth road.

JOKE OF THE MONTH

After every flight, Pilots fill out a form, called a "gripe sheet," which tells mechanics about problems with the aircraft. The mechanics correct the problems, document their repairs on the form, and then pilots review the gripe sheets before the next flight. Never let it be said that ground crews lack a sense of humor. Here are some maintenance complaints submitted by pilots (marked with a P) and the solutions recorded (marked with an S) by maintenance engineers.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
P: Left inside main tire almost needs replacement.
S: Almost replaced left inside main tire e.
P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough.
S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft.
P: Something loose in cockpit
S: Something tightened in cockpit
P: Dead bugs on windshield.
S: Live bugs on back-order.
P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute descent
S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground.
P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear.
S: Evidence removed.
P: DME volume unbelievably loud.
S: DME volume set to more believable level.
P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick.
S: That's what friction locks are for.
P: IFF inoperative in OFF mode.
S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode.
P: Suspected crack in windshield.
S: Suspect you're right.
P: Number 3 engine missing.
S: Engine found on right wing after brief search.
P: Aircraft handles funny. (I love this one!)
S: Aircraft warned to: straighten up, fly right, and be serious.
P: Target radar hums.
S: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics.
P: Mouse in cockpit.
S: Cat installed.
And the best one for last..........
P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer.
S: Took hammer away from midget
Kitchen aprons get stylish
Here's a problem. Your dinner guests will arrive in about one hour, and it's time to get dressed for the party. That means you will put finishing touches on food and carry serving dishes to the table, all in your best clothes.
It's not a problem anymore. The kitchen apron has ascended to the level of costly kitchen fashion. New designs may include satin that hugs the body to reveal curves. They come in colorful, sometimes lacy designs that seem to have little to do with cooking over a hot stove.
One lady wore a racy apron with sweetheart neckline and black lace trim to emphasize that she was the hostess. Caterers were doing the work.
The new aprons are beautiful, but Wall Street Journal shoppers found that most are only available at boutiques and specialty stores. Prices range from $35 to $200. Makers say they hope to make them available to better department stores next year.
Apron makers also sell fashionable aprons for men who enjoy wearing them when they cook for women or barbecue at outdoor parties.
When we think of the veterans we want to honor on November 11, those who served in the "big" wars come to mind, including the World Wars, Korea, and Vietnam.
Since Vietnam, however, the U.S. has been involved in many wars and campaigns. Only during one period from 1984 to 1989 have no Americans fought on foreign lands.
Some 100,000 members of the military in Iraq have been wounded. Many have returned to the United States. As we honor our veterans from this and other wars, let us keep the recently injured in our hearts.
Silicone baking pans
Flexible silicone pans come in many colors
and can be rolled up or folded for storage.
Silicone pans are non-absorbent, nonstick,
and dishwasher-safe.
If you have trouble getting a cake out of a baking pan without breaking it, a silicone pan can help. You can just tip the pan over and peel it off.
Silicone is popular in kitchens. It's used in baking molds, oven mitts, and spatulas. This silicone is a synthetic rubber that can stand up to temperatures from about 450 degrees to -40 degrees.
SiliconeZone of New York city now sells 300 pieces of silicone kitchenware and baking tools. KitchenAid also offers silicone products.
Asking why is usually counterproductive
As people try to work through difficult situations in their lives, they sometimes focus on "Why." They ask: Why was there a tornado; why did I get laid off; why was there a car accident? Why me?
Modern psychologists say they are asking the wrong questions. "Whys" keep them in the victim state and focusing on placing blame.
They should begin to focus on how to get on with their lives by asking "What" and "How." These questions focus on solving problems, and the answers keep you moving forward:
"What should I do now?"
"How can I make my situation better?
"What can I do to get through this and come out a stronger person?"
Doctors at Psychiatric Associates in Indianapolis say asking how and what questions helps you focus on the future instead of the past. You begin to realize that you have the power to make changes.
They recommend honestly admitting to yourself what your thoughts and feeling are. Allow yourself to experience the crisis. Ask yourself the right questions and develop a plan of action.
How to care for pets in cold weather
Though the official start of winter is a few weeks away, in many parts of the country it's cold right now.
That means it's time to plan winter for your pets. The American Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) gives this advice, some of which may be new to pet owners.
Pets need extra water in cold weather. Make sure outside animals have fresh, unfrozen water.
If you have a cat: It's best to keep a cat inside all winter, even if he usually spends some time outside. Cats can freeze easily and can get injured or lost in snow or ice.
If you have a dog: Don't walk your dog on salt-treated roads or sidewalks. Salt can injure their sensitive paws, and they may lick it off and get sick.
Let a dog's coat grow long in winter, but brush it often. Buy a sweater for your short-haired dog.
